SPEED BUMPS
A speed bump is an area of raised pavement approximately 3-1/2 inches high by 2 feet wide by the width of the roadway (typically 24'). Speed bumps are designed to bring the traffic to a nearly complete stop before crossing the area. Speed bumps are commonly used in commercial or residential areas where pedestrian traffic needs to cross and where excess speed can be a problem. Ask your Pavement Network professional for a recommendation on placement of speed bumps.
The Process:
- Lay out and mark area for installation of each speed bump.
- Cut heels in the pavement around the perimeter of the speed bump's footprint. This will allow the bump to tie in tightly with the pavement.
- Place a tack coat to help speed bump adhere to the pavement surface.
- Place hot mix asphalt forming it into a speed bump with dimensions as described above.
- Compact the speed bump using a small roller or plate tamper.
- Paint speed bump with desired color of traffic paint.
