OPEN BASE CRACK MEMBRANE
The crack membrane used in this process is a very heavy layer of asphalt emulsion followed by a special open coursed aggregate asphalt mix that has been fortified with a bonding agent to keep the aggregate together. The aggregate in the mix is large without many fines to create voids when compacted. In many cases the aggregate is crushed concrete particles because concrete is porous and can accept more asphalt cement as binder. The flexible asphaltic membrane is designed to move very slightly under the weight of expected traffic. This allows the underlying cracks in the original pavement to be absorbed into the membrane, significantly retarding the reflective cracking process.

BEFOREAFTER

The Process:

Notify tenants, distribute, and post schedule. All cars must be cleared from each work section.

Edge mill all transition areas and perimeter of lot to a depth and width sufficient to provide proper drainage of new surface.

Excavate and repair marked areas using full depth asphalt. No surface mix is required, just binder asphalt.

Clean the surface of all vegetation and dirt with a broom tractor and forced air blower.

Apply a liquid asphalt emulsion to old asphalt to bond the new layer at least 0.10 gallons per square yard.

Install a layer of asphaltic crack membrane and compact.

Apply another coat of asphalt emulsion on the membrane.

Install surface mix asphalt.
