EMERGENCY PATCHING
Emergency asphalt patching is usually necessary when a pothole suddenly develops or a crack in the pavement develops into a trip hazard. Pavement Network contractors can fix these problems quickly and correctly.
Repairs can be made on a temporary or permanent basis.
Temporary Patching
If longevity of the patch is not an issue, and the hole simply needs to be filled, your contractor can use cold mix asphalt in the following manner:
- Remove any loose debris from the pothole.
- Use a manual tamper to tamp the sub-base material, if applicable.
- Install cold mix asphalt and level with a shovel.
- Tamp the material with a manual or pneumatic tamper.
Permanent Repair
Permanent repair can be made when hot asphalt is available in the necessary timeframe or after a temporary patch has already taken care of the immediate problem.
The Process:
- Neatly cut around the perimeter of the affected area with a jackhammer or pavement saw.
- Excavate deteriorated asphalt. Any unsuitable sub-base material will be hauled from the site.
- Compact the subgrade using a vibratory tamper.
- Apply tack coat to all vertical edges of the existing asphalt to ensure a good bond with the new asphalt.
- Install hot mix asphalt to the desired level and stripe off with proper tools.
- Compact the asphalt thoroughly with a vibratory tamper or small roller.
- In extremely hot conditions, it may be necessary to keep the area free of traffic for a couple of hours. Otherwise the area is ready for traffic.
